From the opening gem of "Heartbreak Express” to Seth's expansive vocal range on the title track, all the way to the album benediction, Don Stover's "Old Reuben No. 1, traditionalists get a full bluegrass-plate special. In between, you’ll hear a fresh take on "Rider on an Orphan Train," a surprising but thoughtful interpretation of heavy-metal band Motörhead's "1916," and a stirring version of Gillian Welch and David Rawling's "Rock of Ages." The band's current single "Gilgarry’s Glen,” a folksy,Scottish-bluegrass ballad, is sure to resonate with leanback listeners, while "Mountain Bill," an orignal from bass man Tyler Griffith, offers that contemporary "mashy" sound that connects with younger bluegrass fans.

As the band prepared to head into the studio last year to record Coming On Strong, frontman Seth Mulder reached out to Dudley Connell and Ken Irwin—two figures he had long admired for their work with the iconic Johnson Mountain Boys. Connell, a founding member of the band, and Irwin, who signed them to Rounder Records in 1980, brought a wealth of experience and authenticity to the project.

Irwin shares, "The studio experience working with Dudley Connell on production and Jim Robeson engineering the album added extra musical depth based on many years working together on Johnson Mountain Boys recordings and others.
